Gauze Swabs vs Nonwoven Swabs: A Buyer’s Guide

Gauze swabs and nonwoven swabs may look similar in a catalogue, but they should not be compared by size and price alone. Material, construction, ply, sterility and packaging all need to match the purchasing specification. This guide explains what buyers should confirm before requesting a bulk quotation.

The main difference is the fabric construction

Woven gauze swabs are made from interlaced yarns, commonly cotton. Nonwoven swabs are made from fibres formed into a sheet without a woven yarn structure; viscose and polyester blends are one example. Neither product name alone defines absorbency, lint performance or suitability for a particular use. Check the specific product data and intended use.

Confirm material and construction

Ask for the exact material composition. For woven gauze, confirm how thread count is measured so that quotations use the same convention. For nonwoven swabs, confirm the fibre blend and fabric weight. GSM means grams per square metre of fabric; it does not state the weight of a finished, folded swab.

An 8-ply woven swab and a 4-ply nonwoven swab are different specifications. Ply alone does not establish equivalent performance. Where performance matters to the purchasing specification, request relevant test information and evaluate samples against the same acceptance criteria.

Match size sterility and packaging

State the finished folded dimensions, not just a product name such as “small gauze.” Include the ply count and any required edge finish or detectable component. Specify sterile or non-sterile status separately; a pouch or blister description alone does not confirm sterility.

For a sterile product, ask the supplier to confirm the sterilization method, labelled shelf life, packaging and supporting documentation for the exact item. Product selection should follow the intended use on the manufacturer’s labelling and the purchasing institution’s requirements.

Packaging also changes the quotation. Record pieces per pouch or sleeve, packs per box, and boxes per carton. Clarify whether the quoted price is per piece, pouch, box or carton. Compare offers using the same product specification, quantity, delivery term and destination.

What to include in a request for quotation

  • Product type and material composition.
  • Finished size, ply and thread count or fabric weight, as applicable.
  • Sterile or non-sterile status and any special construction requirements.
  • Pieces per pack, packs per box and carton requirements.
  • Required quantity, delivery destination and requested delivery term.
  • Labelling, sample approval and destination-market documentation requirements.

For example: “Please quote 100,000 non-sterile nonwoven swabs, 70% viscose and 30% polyester, 5 × 5 cm folded size, 4-ply, 40 gsm fabric, packed 100 pieces per sleeve. Delivery destination: [country and port]. Please confirm MOQ, carton packing, lead time and available documentation.”

This is an example RFQ, not a stock, MOQ or lead-time commitment. Confirm the final specification and availability before placing an order.
